TJ Smith Stakes History

The race is named after the distinguished trainer Tommy Smith, who dominated the Australian racing scene from 1955 until the 1990’s. He trained a succession of triumphant horses and was the winner of the Sydney Trainers Premiership for a phenomenal thirty-two consecutive years.

Previously registered as the Endeavour Stakes, the TJ Smith Stakes began as a Listed race in 1997. Moving up through the ranks over the years, it was finally advanced to its elite Group 1 status in 2005.

TJ Smith Stakes Betting

The betting prize pools open on the TJ Smith are some of the biggest of the whole Sydney Autumn Carnival and this along with the world-class field of contenders means it is one of the most exciting races to bet on!

The weight advantage usually ensures the top entries on the field finish first. Betting on the favourites for the TJ Smith Stakes has proven to provide a profitable return for punters. But you can also make some great money if you keep an eye out for horses that have placed and performed well throughout the Autumn Carnival with longer priced odds for the TJ Smith.

Punters are fortunate the race takes place late in the season, as there are a huge number of lead-up races to study the contenders recent form including the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and the Chipping Norton Stakes. When betting on the TJ Smith Stakes take a look at who the recent winners and placegetters were, as the past few years have shown the second and third placegetters often improve their form to win the race in future runs.

For example, Takeover Target came third behind Reigning To Win and Apache Cat in 2008, only to follow it up next year with a first place triumph. Another example is Spinning Hill, who placed second in 2001, third in 2002, and finally pushed forward to win in 2003. Further down you will find a list of all the recent winners and placegetters for the race to help you spot these dominate runners.

Also keep an eye out for the horses ridden by the most successful jockeys. There has been only one jockey to win multiple TJ Smith Stakes over the last decade, N. Rawiller who rode Takeover Target to victory in 2009, and Bentley Biscuit in 2007.
