Samaready To Continue to 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes

March 24th, 2014

Despite returning to the track in less-than-convincing form this preparation, trainer Mick Price has confirmed classy mare Samaready will continue through to an appearance in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 12th.

Finishing a competitive third in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up on February 15th, Samaready was unable to match the late pace of fellow Price-trained runner Lankan Rupee when fifth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before failing to make any impact whatsoever and finishing ninth (of ten) in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last Friday night.

While disappointed mostly with her latest result, Price told Racing Victoria News the More Than Ready mare has pulled up well and will receive a change in riding tactics in the T.J. Smith Stakes.

“When she won the Moir Stakes she was ridden off the speed and swooped on them and maybe at this point of her career that’s how she needs to be ridden” Price said.

“I’m not sure what to make exactly of her run, the fence was supposed to be off and maybe she was ridden too far forward.

“She pulled up well, look well and is sound but she’s not Black Caviar.

“We’ll be positive with her and get to Sydney for the T.J. Smith and see what happens.”

Having recently been ranked as the world’s current leading sprinter following resounding victories in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Newmarket Handicap, Price confirmed Lankan Rupee will join Samaready in Sydney for the T.J. Smith Stakes.

“He had about seven days out and put on 9 kilos which is pretty good and gives me plenty of horse to work with heading towards the T.J. Smith” Price said.

“We’ll aim him towards a trial at Randwick on the course proper on Friday the 4th of April.

“We’ll also gallop him in the reverse direction to get ready for the race.”

Following his scintillating start to 2014 and current five race win streak, Lankan Rupee currently leads betting markets for the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes at a short quote of $3.60, ahead of Buffering ($6.50), Zoustar ($7) and Snitzerland ($10).

Samaready is currently offered at particularly generous odds on $21 for success in the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes.
