April 11th, 2014

A capacity field of 18 runners have accepted a position in the final field for the 2014 Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this Saturday, offering punters several key opportunities to place a winning bet.

Having returned to the track in typically devastating form this preparation, Lankan Rupee currently leads betting markets for success in the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes at still-generous odds of $3.80, ahead of Buffering ($6), Gordon Lord Byron ($8) and Zoustar ($11).

Will Lankan Rupee make it three Group 1 victories back-to-back in the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals record a huge upset?

1st

Lankan Rupee ($3.80)

Unable to string together anything of a consistent run of form prior to being gelded at the conclusion of his 2013 autumn preparation, Lankan Rupee has since claimed an incredible six victories from seven starts. Strolling home to win the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) by nearly four lengths first-up on February 8th, the Redoute’s Choice gelding comfortably pulled clear of the pack to claim a maiden Group 1 victory in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) on February 22nd before repeating the dose to win the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) by two-and-a-half lengths last time out. Allocated the ideal inside barrier for the T.J. Smith, all signs point towards another convincing victory for Mick Price’s star this weekend.

2nd

Buffering ($6)

One of the standout performers of the 2013 spring, Buffering was unlucky to finish second in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) first-up before claiming all of the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) back-to-back. While unable to figure when seventh in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) first-up this season, trainer Robert Heathcote is confident his stable’s star will be far better for the competitive run, and is likely to receive the run of the race in this weekend’s T.J. Smith Stakes, having drawn one barrier outside Lankan Rupee in gate 2.

3rd

Bel Sprinter ($51)

One of the most consistent performers of the 2013 spring season, Bel Sprinter scored a huge first-up victory in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) prior to running third to equine superstar Black Caviar in the 2013 edition of the T.J. Smith before closing his memorable season second in the Group 1 Krisflyer International Sprint 2013 (1200m) abroad in Singapore. While yet to his peak condition in his current preparation, trainer Jason Warren will fit Bel Sprinter with a blindfold for the loading process in an attempt to overcome a knack for slow starts. A proven performer over track and distance, Bel Sprinter offers punters incredible value for money at long $51 odds, or $12.40 for a place.
