2014 T.J. Smith Stakes Winner is Lankan Rupee

April 12th, 2014

Champion sprinter Lankan Rupee has continued his incredible run of form, easily pulling clear of all rivals to win the major Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) by nearly four lengths on day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Jumping well and taking up the early pace in what has become typical fashion, the talented Redoute’s Choice gelding was in prime position rounding the bend; producing an incredible turn of foot to blaze away from the pack and find the line well clear of Rebel Dane and Buffering.

Trainer Mick Price revealed he was unsure how Lankan Rupee would take to the damp surface in the T.J. Smith Stakes, but was understandably pleased with the performance and overall result.

“Especially on the wet track I was very concerned obviously, barrier 1 but I just left it up to Craig (Newitt)” Price said following the T.J. Smith Stakes.

“Where he found the outside of the track; it was not our plan to lead Buffering but that’s what the good jockeys do, they make their own decisions in the Group 1’s and that’s what Craig did and he had the horse underneath him.

“I just think he’s come of age and the horse has come of age and it’s fantastic.

“Obviously it was a really heavy track and it just gives him another dimension to being a 1200 metre sprinter.”

Jockey Craig Newitt delivered a sensational ride on Lankan Rupee in the 2014 T.J. Smith Stakes, and believes Lankan Rupee has the class to overcome any obstacle, anywhere in the world.

“It’s scary; I truly believe he could go anywhere in the world now and be dominant” Newitt said immediately after dismounting.

“He wasn’t all that comfortable in the ground today, once he flew the gates I just let him tow me as long as he could and he was getting a little big leg-weary on the line but had them well and truly covered.

“Before his major operation (gelding) that’s been well documented, he was always a pretty handy horse but he’s just gone to a whole new level, it’s a credit to Mick and his staff.”

Recently ranked as the world’s best sprinter this year, Lankan Rupee won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) with ease first-up and has since strolled home in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and now the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes.

A trip to Britain and appearance at Royal Ascot now appears well and truly on the cards for the talented sprinter this year.
