2015 T.J. Smith Stakes to Figure for Lankan Rupee

December 16th, 2014

Securing a fourth victory at the highest level of Australian racing most notably over a strong 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Mick Price has revealed leading sprinter Lankan Rupee has returned to work ahead of a 2015 Autumn Carnival which will peak with a title defence in the Group 1T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships.

Without doubt the standout performer of the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Lankan Rupee won the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) by close to four lengths first-up before completing an incredible run of three-straight Group 1 victories; taking out each of the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and T.J. Smith Stakes is succession.

Suffering several notable hoof issues through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, despite taking out the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) most notably, Price confirmed the son of Redoute’s Choice has return to a picture of health over his time in the spelling paddock and should return to racing in typically scintillating form.

“His feet have grown out and he’s wearing a normal pair of shoes,” Price told TVN.

“My farrier did a great job with his feet. I don’t want to use that as an excuse for anything.

“I’m really happy with him.”

Securing ten wins and a further six minor places from his 20 career starts so far, Lankan Rupee was unable to secure much of a consistent run of form until his gelding at the conclusion of the 2013 Autumn Carnival, since which time he has been close to unstoppable.

Pipped on the line by Angelic Light in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) first-up on September 6th, Lankan Rupee ran an agonizingly-close second to Buffering in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) on September 26th leading into his Manikato Stakes triumph; progressing to a third place finish behind Terravista and Chautauqua in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last time out on November 8th.
