January 15th, 2015

With just under three months until The Championships at Royal Randwick kick-off once again, several of the world’s leading sprinters understandably dominate early betting for the 2015 Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m).

Charging home to secure a maiden victory at the highest level over the closing stages of the 2014 spring, classy short distance specialist Terravista has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite in early T.J. Smith Stakes betting markets, currently available at a quote of $4.60 for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

A stable star for trainer Joe Pride since an impressive four length victory on debut in early 2013, Terravista returned to the track in typically slick form in 2014; taking out each of the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) before a luckless run for 11th in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) drew to a close his preparation.

Returning in spring undoubtedly in career-best form, the Captain Rio gelding secured back-to-back victories in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) and Group 2 The Shorts (1100m), and while unlucky to finish fifth in a fanning conclusion to the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), responded in the best way possible when beating a talent-rich field to the line in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8th.

Running an agonizingly-close second to Terravista in the Darley Classic, classy Team Hawkes-trained sprinter Chautauqua failed to finish worse than runner up in spring and currently registers as outright second favourite for success in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes at even $5 odds.

Finishing outside the places just twice over his ten start career to date, Chautauqua secured several positive results over the 2014 autumn season, but was unable to string together much of a consistent run of form.

Jogging home to win the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) by close to three lengths first-up on September 13th, the son of Encosta De Lago repeated the dose in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) on October 4th; this time by four lengths in what was his only other start prior to the Darley Classic.

The second of Team Hawkes’ exciting and serious chances for success in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes, Deep Field is yet to experience much more than a sprinkling of bets for success but remains outright third-favourite at a quote of $6.

Yet to taste anything but success over his five start career, the Northern Meteor entire won a minor over 1100m first-up in spring on September 24th before making a successful transition to black type racing when taking out each of the Listed Tatts Club Lightning (1100m) and Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m).

Four-time Group 1 champion and 2014 winner Lankan Rupee currently registers as the only other possible T.J. Smith entrant currently offered at a single figures quote at a generous $8, while classy three-year-old Brazen Beau can be taken at odds of $11 for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
