Chautauqua ($3) has returned to racing in typically good form this season and has maintained status as sole occupant of the top line of 2015 TJ Smith Stakes betting ahead of Terravista ($3.10), Lankan Rupee ($4.80) and Sweet Idea ($6.50) with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.

Will Chautauqua justify favouritism and win the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?

1st

Terravista ($3.10)

Terravista was unable to match the late pace of runaway three-year-old Brazen Beau in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up but is sure to take valuable condition from the hit-out in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes and is more than worth consideration for a bet at current odds. A standout performer for Joe Pride over spring, the Captain Rio gelding won each of the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) and Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) first-up before placing a luckless fifth in a fanning finish in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m). Having posted a maiden win at the highest level in the talent-rich Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on November 8th, Terravista will be partnered by leading jockey Hugh Bowman this weekend.

2nd

Chautauqua ($3)

Chautauqua is interestingly yet to break through for a win at the highest level of racing but is in the right form to reverse that trend in the 2015 TJ Smith Stakes. Finishing outside the first three only twice in 12 career starts, the Encosta De Lago gelding won both the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) and Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) upon resuming in spring; returning to the paddock after running second in the Darley Classic. Having taken out the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) in his only other start prior to the Newmarket Handicap, Chautauqua will be partnered by Tommy Berry on Saturday.

3rd

Tiger Tees ($31)

While Lankan Rupee is clearly the other leading chance for success in the 2015 T.J. Smith Stakes, Tiger Tees is a proven wet track specialist and is sure to take up the pace this weekend, and is therefore more than worth consideration for a bet at generous $31 odds for success or $6 to finish in the first three. A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of The Galaxy (1200m), Tiger Tees ran a credible fourth in the 2014 TJ Smith on a rain-soaked track before placing third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m). Drawn well in barrier 2 and confirmed to be partnered by leading hoop James McDonald, the Dubawi gelding may figure as a smart betting play this weekend.
