2016 TJ Smith Stakes Likely for Srikandi

December 15th, 2015

Trainer Ciaron Maher was understandably thrilled with the results posted by Srikandi this year, and has revealed his star mare will likely be set for a first-up run in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) during The Championships at Royal Randwick.

Srikandi returned to racing this year for success in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast, and while unable to make anything of an impact in either of the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m), responded in the best way possible when taking out each of the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) and Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

Returning in spring for a close second in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), the Dubawi mare returned to the paddock after running a credible fifth in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 7th.

Having posted a good portion of her success, particularly at black type level north of the border in Queensland, Maher told Racing.com Srikandi will likely kick off in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes in April before targeting a race like the Doomben 10,000.

“We might have a look at the T.J. first,” Maher said.

“She does really like that sting out of the ground and she has a pretty good record fresh at the 1200.

“We then have a view to head towards the Doomben 10,000 with her.”

Srikandi has been a strong and consistent performer since debuting to racing in 2013; posting an exceptional nine wins and three minors through only fifteen competitive starts.

Winning a pair of Victorian minors as a three-year-old in early 2014, Maher floated Srikandi north, who responded well in taking out each of the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m), Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) before running third in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Srikandi is currently rated a $15 chance of success in early 2016 TJ Smith Stakes betting markets.
