Early 2016 TJ Smith Stakes Betting Update

January 27th, 2016

Contested on the first day of The Championships each year, the 2016 Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) is set to draw a talented field of some of the world’s best sprinters; figuring as a particularly lucrative race from a betting perspective as a result.

Chautauqua poked clear to post a maiden win at the highest level in last year’s edition of the race and remains outright $4 favourite in early 2016 TJ Smith Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au following an impressive Spring Carnival campaign.

Chautauqua returned to racing in slick form in 2015; winning the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) first-up and running second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before his TJ Smith Stakes triumph.

Returning to the paddock after placing third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1200m), the Encosta De Lago gelding resumed in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) before posting his second Group 1 triumph in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) in October.

Having run a close second in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last time out, Chautauqua will be aimed at the TJ Smith upon resuming in 2016.

Godolphin colt Exosphere failed to fire as an odds-on favourite in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) last time out, but has displayed a love for the Sydney way of going and is a justifiable $5 second favourite in early TJ Smith Stakes betting markets.

Exosphere stormed onto the Australian racing scene as a two-year-old with success in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) last autumn but failed to fire in the Golden Slipper and was returned to the paddock.

Mustering a huge turn of foot to win the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) upon resuming in spring, the classy son of Lonhro repeated the dose for his first Group 1 win in the Golden Rose (1400m) before also taking out the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) in his only other start prior to the Stud Stakes.

Trainer John O’Shea has revealed Exosphere will likely be trialled down the straight once more in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) in early autumn before progression to the TJ Smith Stakes.

Interestingly figuring as the only other runner currently available at early 2016 TJ Smith Stakes odds of less than $10, Terravista ($9) produced a few typically commendable performances in spring and will be set for the major Autumn Carnival sprint this time.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Darley Classic, Terravista returned in spring for success in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) and while failing to fire and seventh in the Manikato Stakes, ended his campaign third in the Darley Classic.

Delectation represents terrific value at current $11 TJ Smith Stakes odds while three-year-old Japonisme is not without a chance at a quote of $13.
