Chautauqua poked clear to post a late win in last year’s edition of the headline autumn sprint and has been included for a title defence in 2016 TJ Smith nominations.

Chautauqua has been a standout performer for Team Hawkes since first appearing on course competitively in 2013; posting an impressive nine wins and seven minors through eighteen career starts.

Resuming in 2015 for success in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m), the Encosta De Lago gelding progressed to second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before claiming his first Group 1 win in the TJ Smith Stakes.

Returning to the paddock after placing third in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), Chautauqua returned in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) before delivering a talented field defeat in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Failing to make up the distance late when second to fellow TJ Smith Stakes nominee Delectation in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) last time out in November, Chautauqua will likely be kept to a light autumn preparation with this race as his grand final.

Delectation produced a number of standout performances between failed attempts in 2015 and undoubtedly leads trainer Chris Waller’s seven-strong list of 2016 TJ Smith Stakes nominations which also includes Japonisme.

Claiming five wins and seven minors through 20 careers starts so far, Delectation returned last year for second in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m), but failed to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.

Ending his autumn campaign with success in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, the Shamardal gelding placed sixth in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) upon resuming in spring before finishing second in the Gilgai Stakes and fourth in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) leading into his Darley Classic triumph.

Three-year-old Japonisme was a star for Waller early last spring in winning three-consecutive minors and the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m), but failed to make anything of an impact in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on August 29th.

Running third in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) on October 3rd, the Choisir gelding has not been seen at the races since posting a resounding defeat over a strong field as an outsider in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31st.

Star sprinter Lankan Rupee is the notable omission from 2016 TJ Smith nominations, but the ever-dangerous Terravista in on track for the Group 1 race on Day 1 of The Championships.

Breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the 2014 edition of the Darley Classic, Terravista resumed last year for consecutive third-place finishes in each of the Newmarket Handicap and TJ Smith Stakes most notably.

Successfully defending his crown in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) upon returning in spring, Terravista failed to perform when seventh in the Manikato Stakes but returned to the paddock after finishing third in the Darley Classic.
