2016 TJ Smith Stakes Field and Barrier Draw

March 29th, 2016

A talented field of fifteen sprinters has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of racing.

Chautauqua was unable to make up the ground late when third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) last time out but will relish a return to Sydney for the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes on Saturday.

Breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level in the 2015 edition of the TJ Smith Stakes, Chautauqua returned to racing in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) before producing arguably a career-best performance to win the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Returning to the paddock after finishing an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m), the talented son of Encosta De Lago produced a scintillating late turn of foot to win the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) first-up this time on February 20th.

While charged with overcoming the wide and reasonably awkward barrier 11, Chautauqua has been confirmed to be partnered by notable hoop Tommy Berry in the TJ Smith Stakes.

Godolphin have a big opinion of three-year-old Exosphere who is drawn ideally in barrier 4 for his run in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes.

Stamping himself as one to watch as a two-year-old through last year’s Autumn Carnival, Exosphere resumed in spring for a commanding win in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) before breaking through for a maiden Group 1 success in the Golden Rose (1400m).

Returning from a brief freshen-up for success in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m), the Lonhro colt was unable to justify his resounding favouritism when fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31st.

Having finished a disappointing fourth in the Lightning Stakes first-up this time, regular hoop James McDonald takes the ride on Exosphere once more this weekend.

Leading jockey Hugh Bowman has elected to ride Delectation in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes, who could very well receive the run of the race from barrier 2.

Failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) first-up in spring, Delectation continued to improve in placing second in the Gilgai Stakes and fourth in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) before producing a career-best effort to win the Darley Classic.

While failing to make much of an impact in two starts this time, the son of Shamardal will enjoy a return to the Sydney way of going and is sure to be boosted by the addition of Bowman.

Flamberge is yet to taste anything but success through three starts this time and will have his first start for trainer Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes.

Beating a classy field to the line in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in May last year, Flamberge was unable to reach the same racing highs through a short Spring Carnival campaign.

Delivering a strong group of sprinters defeat in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this time however, the Exceed And Excel gelding is seeking a third-consecutive win at the highest level this weekend after taking out the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last Thursday.
