Terravista Primed for 2016 TJ Smith Stakes

March 29th, 2016

Trainer Joe Pride was understandably disappointed by Terravista’s lacklustre performance in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) a fortnight ago, but is confident the horse is primed to return to winning form in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

Terravista was sent off a $5 favourite in The Galaxy but did his chances so favours from the outset when jumping poorly and forced to settle within the crowded and capacity field of fourteen.

Having failed to produce much of a turn of foot in the final stages of the race, Pride told AAP the horse has pulled up well from his failed attempt at The Galaxy and is confident he will be tough to beat in the TJ Smith Stakes 2016.

“It was one of those races we didn’t target and maybe the month between runs second-up hurt us,” Pride said.

“I can throw a few excuses at it but there’s nothing solid or concrete there that I’ve found.

“We had a foot issue going into that run but he pulled up 100 per cent so I can only say that I don’t think that bothered him on the day.

“He’s in terrific order.

“A wet track won’t hurt his chances at all.”

Regular hoop Hugh Bowman has been confirmed to ride Delectation in the 2016 TJ Smith Stakes and Pride is pleased to have confirmed the services of Brenton Avdulla in place.

“He’s proven at this level,” Avdulla said.

“He ran well in the TJ last year.

“Joey’s pretty confident with him going into Saturday.”

Terravista has been a strong and consistent performer for Pride through his entire 21 start career so far; posting a total of ten wins and five minors.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Darley Classic (1200m), the Captain Rio gelding returned this time for an agonizingly-close second to Chautauqua in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) on February 20th.
