That is the tale of the tape in early 2017 TJ Smith Stakes betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, where the multiple Group 1 winner remains an outright $5 favourite to win the sprint feature race on March 21st.

Chautauqua broke through for a maiden win at the highest level in the 2015 edition of the TJ Smith Stakes, but undoubtedly found career-best form through the 2016 Autumn Carnival.

Resuming from a dominant win in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m), the Encosta De Lago gelding progressed to third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) before successfully defending his crown in the TJ Smith Stakes.

Justifying a decision to head abroad with a strong win in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) in Hong Kong on May 1st, Chautauqua was unable to make anything of two starts in spring; running fourth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (100m) and seventh in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

Two horses; Astern and Spieth currently share the second line of early 2017 TJ Smith Stakes betting at generous $7 quotes.

Astern has been a standout performer for Godolphin since making his racing debut in late 2015 and will enter the 2017 Autumn Carnival with a record of five wins and two minors, through only eight starts.

Having beaten a classy field to the line in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) first-up in spring, Astern stormed home to post a maiden Group 1 win in the Golden Rose (1400m) on September 10th; finding the line close to three lengths in the clear of closest rival Omei Sword.

Having run on well for second in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) on October 1st, the Medaglia D’Oro colt was last seen hitting the line hard for second behind Flying Artie in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 29th.

Spieth has a breakout season in spring and will look to build off his impressive record during the 2017 Autumn Carnival.

Resuming for a smart win in the Listed Lightning (1100m) at Randwick on October 15th, the Thorn Park entire produced a monumental turn of foot to finish an agonizingly-close second in the Darley Classic at his last appearance.
