2017 TJ Smith Stakes a Target for Star Turn

January 31st, 2017

Jockey Tommy Berry is excited by the prospect of partnering three-year-old Star Turn through a 2017 Autumn Carnival campaign that is likely to be geared towards a race like the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships.

Star Turn was a standout performer for Team Hawkes through the recent Spring Carnival and was last seen maintaining well to the line for third behind Flying Artie and Astern in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 29th.

Having partnered the Star Witness colt in the majority of his work in the lead-up to autumn, Berry told Racenet that he is excited by the horse’s prospects of success this time, against open company in races like the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

“I’ve ridden Star Turn in a couple of gallops and he feels very focused,” Berry said.

“I think he’s come back even stronger even though that’s almost impossible, he was pretty strong to begin with. But I also think he might be a bit more race-smart this preparation, he was still a big baby last time in.

“The three-year-old sprinters we have now I think are the best crop we’ve seen in a while.”

Star Turn stamped himself as a colt to follow through a smart two-year-old campaign and ended the autumn of 2016 a credible sixth in the featured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), having also finished fifth in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

Trialling well in the lead-up to his spring campaign, the colt out of Golden Delicious resumed for a smart win in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) before running second to Astern in the Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m).

Undoubtedly producing a career-best effort to date third-up in spring, Star Turn was tested against open company for the first time and comfortably beat a field which included the likes of Malaguerra and Fell Swoop by close to three lengths in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best early 2017 TJ Smith Stakes odds, for which Star Turn can be taken at a generous quote of $12 for success.
