Chautauqua remains an outright $5 favourite in 2017 TJ Smith Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au despite drifting, ahead of Russian Revolution ($5.50) and fellow three-year-old Astern ($6).

Will Chautauqua justify favouritism and return to winning form in the 2017 TJ Smith Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

1st

Chautauqua ($5)

Five-time Group 1 champion Chautauqua is yet to return to winning form this season, but has performed admirably in less-than favourable conditions and could again find ideal running in the TJ Smith Stakes. Winner of the two most recent editions of the featured sprint, Chautauqua clearly took plenty of benefit from his first-up run for third in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) when he finished an agonizingly-close second to Le Romain in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 4th. Last seen working home well for third in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), the Encosta De Lago gelding should be rock-hard fit leading into the TJ Smith Stakes and will be partnered by Tommy Berry.

2nd

Voodoo Lad ($16)

Voodoo Lad ran an impressive second in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up this time and should only improve when he steps out in the TJ Smith Stakes. A strong and consistent performer since transferring to the care of Darren Weir, the I Am Invincible gelding posted consecutive wins in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) and Listed Fruit Supply Stakes (1200m) before running second to Bon Aurum in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) most notably in spring. Drawn ideally in barrier 3, Voodoo Lad will be partnered by last-start hoop Damian Lane.

3rd

Russian Revolution ($4.50)

Russian Revolution returned to the races for an impressive win in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) a fortnight ago, is weighted well and should find himself in the finish of the TJ Smith Stakes with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle. The Snitzel colt produced a number of outstanding performances in spring and was returned to the paddock after running a credible fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
