Just six horses have accepted for a spot in the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes final field and barrier draw, including Foxwedge.

Foxwedge will be preparing for his overseas campaign in Ascot later in the year and will be having his first start since being purchased as a stallion prospect by Newgate Farm.

Original owner Edmund Bateman retained a 25 per cent share in the horse and will be eagerly watching to see if he can increase his value with a win in this weekend’s 2012 TJ Smith Stakes.

“It’s always an anxiety racing these horses at that level because it’s never a given,” Bateman said.

“Group One racing is serious competition.

“I think one of the major issues is we need the horse (Foxwedge) to run this week as he’s preparing to go to Ascot.

“Clearly we would love to win the TJ as well.

“From my point of view it’s a home town, home track run and I’d just love to see him do well there for his own sake but also personally.”

Foxwedge has won five of his 12 race starts and has earned more than $900,000 in prize money during his career.

The Fastnet Rock colt was purchased from the 2010 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $925,000 in prize money and is now trained at Royal Randwick by John O’Shea.

Foxwedge has drawn barrier three for the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes and will be ridden by jockey Nash Rawiller.

Rain Affair, Varenna Miss and Hallowell Belle are also included in the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes final field and barrier draw.

Atlantic Jewel did not accept for the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes and will instead run in the 2012 Sapphire Stakes on the same day.

The 2011 TJ Smith Stakes will run as Race 5 at Randwick Racecourse this Saturday and is due to jump at 2.20pm (AEST).

Rounding out the field are Metal Bender (barrier six) in his first race start for 2010 under training from new mentor Chris Waller and Lord Tavistock (barrier one) coming off a win in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes four weeks ago.

This year the winner of the TJ Smith automatically qualifies to run in the highly prestigious American thoroughbred race, the US$1 million Breeder’s Cup Turf Sprint (1200m) held in November at Kentucky.

The $1.3 million Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) is the premier event held at Randwick on Saturday and other black type races due to be held include the $300,000 Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and the $150,000 Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m).

The 2010 Darley T J Smith Stakes will be held as race four on Saturday’s card and is due to start at 1:45pm (NSW time).
