Nominations have been released for the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes, which is due to run at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday April 14, 2012.

11 horses have been nominated for a start in the race, including Foxwedge.

Foxwedge won the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley racecourse last start ahead of Hay List and has since been sold for a speculated $13 million to stud.

The three-year-old is due to run in Australia and England before he goes to stand at stud in the spring.

Current trainer John O’Shea is confident Foxwedge can win the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes.

”The TJ has developed into the race that crowns the best sprinter and it is on his home track, which is an advantage,” O’Shea said.

The trainer felt the sale of Foxwedge was a deserved reward for owner Dr Edmund Bateman, who paid $925,000 for the young colt at the yearling sales.

”He has been sold but he will still go to Royal Ascot and hopefully can win another couple of Group 1s before he goes to stud,” trainer John O’Shea said.

”It is great for Dr Bateman, who has put a lot into the sport and is getting something out of it.”

Foxwedge has won five of his 12 race starts and has earned more than $890,000 in prize money.

Rain Affair has also been nominated for the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes after winning his last start in the 2012 Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Rosehill on March 31, 2012.

The Commands gelding will be looking to win his first Group 1 race start in the race.

Rain Affair has won 11 of his 13 race starts and has earned more than $725,000 in prize money.

Atlantic Jewel, who is also nominated for the 2012 Sapphire Stakes, is also included in the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes nominations.

The Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes is due to run at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday April 14, 2012.

Run under weight-for-age conditions, the race is also run over a distance of 1,200 metres,

The 2012 TJ Smith Stakes is worth $1 million in prize money and is open to horses of all ages.

Rain Affair is headed towards the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes after winning his last start in the Group 2 Parramatta Stakes.

The four-year-old gelding has won 11 of his 13 race starts and has now warned more than $725,000 in prize money.

Trainer Joseph Pride is confident of Rain Affair’s chances in the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes.

”The TJ is very much on the agenda,” Pride said.

“I have been quite soft on him to have him primed for that and hopefully the track has some give in it.

”If he gets a wet track for the TJ, they won’t beat him.”

New Zealand galloper Choice Bro will also be aimed at the 2012 TJ Smith Stakes after winning the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes last start.

“I think he will be well suited over a mile and the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1600m) in Queensland on June 9 would be an ideal race so we will have to sit down and discuss what we would like to do next,” trainer John Sargent said.

The 2012 TJ Smith Stakes is held on AJC Australian Derby Day and share’s its program with the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby, Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes, Group 2 Sapphire Stakes, Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap, Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes, Group 3 Royal Parma Stakes, Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes and Group 3 Adrian Knox Quality Stakes.

The Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes will be full of action when it runs on Randwick Racecourse’s AJC Australian Derby Day this Saturday April 9, 2011.

The race may very well serve as the means for the world’s best racehorse, Black Caviar, to make further horse racing history by posting her 12th unbeaten victory.

With a race field that is full of such amazing talent, we have put together the hottest insider tips for the race.

There is absolutely no going past the super mare Black Caviar to win the 2011 TJ Smith Stakes.

Despite her short price, it seems crazy to put any money against the freakishly talented four-year-old.

Black Caviar is currently the $1.24 favourite to win the $1 million TJ Smith Stakes at Luxbet, in what appears to be her longest odds in a very long time.

We recommend you back Black Caviar right away as this price is sure to shorten up considerably as the race nears closer.

Black Caviar will jump from barrier five in the 2011 TJ Smith Stakes and will be ridden by regular jockey Luke Nolen.

For second, we are picking John McNair’s Hay List, who is fresh from a win in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes on March 27, 2011.

The five-year-old gelding has drawn wide for the 1,200 metre sprint, and is due to jump from barrier 10.

Hay List will be ridden by jockey Glyn Schofield and will carry 58.5 kilograms.

Shoot Out features as our third place pick in our 2011 TJ Smith Stakes tips, with the four-year-old being first-up in Saturday’s TJ Smith Stakes.

The High Chaparral gelding has won seven of his 19 race starts and has accrued more than $1.82 million in his career.

Shoot Out won the feature AJC Australian Derby on this day last year, and will jump from barrier two in this year’s 2011 TJ Smith Stakes.

Randwick Race 5 Tips – Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m)

Favourite Tip: #7 Black Caviar

Best Place Picks: #1 Hay List and #2 Shoot Out

After a brilliant decision by trainer Gerald Ryan, three-year-old Melito took out the $500,000 Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Originally aimed at the $150,000 Group 2 Lady Sonia McMahon Memorial Stakes (Sapphire Stakes) at the same meeting, Ryan opted to run his talented filly up against an open field of sprinters in the Group 1 T J Smith after only six other horses were paid-up for.

It proved the right move as Melito ($10), ridden by Blake Shinn, produced a powerful late burst leaving behind Hot Danish ($3.90) three-quarters of a length away in second with the $3.30 favourite Mic Mac just a short-head further back for third.

Following the top three, the Peter Moody-trained Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted ($3.90) snared fourth followed by Patronyme ($12), Metal Bender ($19) and Lord Tavistock ($21).

After settling worse than mid-field, Shinn and Melito surged to the lead inside the last 200m to claim victory and stop Hot Danish from winning their first Group 1 success in eight unsuccessful attempts.

A daughter of Redoute’s Choice, Melito maintained her impressive second-up record with her win in the 2010 T J Smith and atoned for her third place to Patronyme in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes last start.

Melito became the seventh T J Smith winner to go out at double-figure odds in the races’ 14 year history, giving trainer Ryan his first Group 1 success since he won the Oakleigh Plate with Snitzel in 2006.

The $300,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 24 is next on the agenda as Melito will attempt double Group 1 glory at the Sydney before heading to Queensland for the Brisbane winter carnival.

T J Smith second and third placegetters Hot Danish and Mic Mac will try to turn the tables as they face off against Melito again in the All Aged Stakes.

It was a cracker day of racing at Randwick on Saturday, with emerging stayer Shoot Out winning the $1.3 million Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m), which was the feature event at the meeting.

On Saturday the Royal Randwick racecourse will host one of the most anticipated autumn meetings, the AJC Australian Derby day.

Nine brilliant races will feature on the card, including the $500,000 Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m), where seven of the nation’s most competitive and impressive sprinters will fight it out for the prestigious victory.

The small final field in no way reflects the quality of the runners, with seven stars of the turf engaged in the Darley sponsored weight-for-age showdown.

The Gerald Ryan-trained three-year-old Melito is an uncertain starter in the 2010 T J Smith Stakes at this stage having been accepted in the fillies and mares $150,000 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) also held at Randwick on Saturday as well.

Currently two horses are battling for favouritism in the betting markets for the T J Smith Stakes, Hot Danish at $3.20 and Mic Mac following closely at $2.80 with IASbet.

The Les Bridge-trained Nothin’ Leica Dane mare Hot Danish is having her first start since winning the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes three weeks back at Rosehill. The talented six-year-old has saluted in 12 of her 22 career starts and will jump from barrier three with Tim Clark aboard on Saturday.

Mic Mac is the other highly fancied runner, the Greg Eurell-trained four-year-old gelding returning to racing following a spell. It will be Mic Mac’s first start since November last year, but the son of Statue Of Liberty had a promising barrier trial on March 30 running first over 990m.
